Texas Voter Fraud Or Mistaken Identity?
When a 27-year-old woman went to cast her ballot Monday in Sullivan City, poll workers walked her straight to the voting booth.
But when a strikingly similar looking woman — with the same brown eyes, the same brown hair and the same birthday — arrived Tuesday, they became suspicious. Poll workers accused her of attempting to vote twice.
The controversy prompted the Hidalgo County Elections Department to file an incident report with the District Attorney’s Office last week.
Any investigation will attempt to answer two questions: Did the woman who voted Monday attempt to vote again on Tuesday? Or were poll workers confused by identical twins?
“They were saying I went two times,” said Belen Escalera, standing next to her twin sister Belinda. “When they know we’re twins.”
Belen and Belinda Escalera both graduated from La Joya High School. They’re both 5 feet tall with brown hair and brown eyes. And they both live on the same street in Sullivan City.
Telling them apart, though, isn’t tricky.
Belen just had a baby and she’s slightly heavier than Belinda, who has a small mole above her lip.
Belen also has tattoos on her neck; Belinda doesn’t.
