Photo: Strange creatures in the depths
Photo by Bill Willard at Saltwater Park |
Shoreline resident Bill Willard noted my shock at the variety of marine life that has been apparently hiding from me for decades. Contributors have sent in recent photos of sea lions and orcas cavorting in the waters just off Richmond Beach Saltwater Park.
So Bill decided to shock me some more and sent in this photo of a Giant Pacific Octopus.
Bill says,
The variety of marine life that can be seen at our local beaches can be quite surprising. I took this photo at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park a few years ago when Zoey my Lab tried to retrieve a dead giant pacific octopus from the waves. For reference she was a good sized dog at about 75 pounds.
According to National Geographi
Giant Pacific Octopus Enteroctopus dofleini
Average life span in the wild: 3 to 5 years
Size: 9.75 to 16 ft (3 to 5 m)
Weight: 22 to 110 lbs (10 to 50 kg)
What's next?
DKH
