Actor Adam West, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia, died Friday night in Los Angeles. He was 88.

Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter cited a representative with the West family who confirmed the death of the actor who was best known for his campy role of Batman in the 1960s television series.

Members of West's family said in a statement that he had always aspired to make a positive impact on the lives of his many fans, and that West saw himself as "The Bright Knight.
