"Stunned"
"Stunned" in American sports writer-ese is the equivalent of "shambolic" or "talismanic" in English soccer writing. There is no other word, the verb "stun," "stunned," the adjectival variant "stunning," that American sports crayons use to describe an "upset."
Read any account of Howard University's victory at Nevada-Las Vegas or Liberty's at Baylor (another school that should be shut down) last night.
Howard plays in the huge second tier of American college tackle football. UNLV plays in the huge first tier. It was Howard's first ever win over a first tier team. UNLV was a 45 point favorite and in that sense this was the greatest "upset" in the history of the sport. So, congratulations to the "Bison." It wasn't so long ago however that losing to UNLV would have been considered stunningly embarrassing. UNLV is a "mid-major" football program, not Alabama or Florida State or Ohio State or Michigan. The "Runnin' Rebels" serve as schedule fodder for those elite programs. So, sorry Howard, this was not Appalachian State beating Michigan in the "Big House."
The "Runnin' Rapists" of Whacko have a new coach, Matt Rhule, late of Temple. The "Flaming Jerry Falwells" are a near equal to Howard in tackle football prowess. Liberty's win is second-only (in the first week) to Howard's in stunning-hood.
